Irish airline CityJet has finally announced its plan to acquire 23 former Mesaba Avro RJ85s. Under the US$221 million deal, the airline is scheduled to receive the first RJ85 in November, with deliveries continuing through the middle of 2007. The RJ85s will progressively replace CityJet’s current fleet of sixteen BAe 146-200s and two 146-300s. All will be operated on behalf of Air France, although some may fly in the airline’s own colors, as at present. Aside from bringing its fleet average age down from about 19 years to 6 years, the move will give CityJet a homogeneous fleet, resulting in substantial savings in maintenance costs.
