The operator of two former Air Wisconsin BAe 146-200As that were recently ferried to Mexico is now known to be Sol Airlines, a new airline being established in the Dominican Republic by Brazilian investors. Sol Airlines will be based at La Romana, on the southeastern coast of the island. They hope to operate as many as ten BAe 146s on domestic and regional flights, as well as Boeing 767s on long-haul services. The first 146, series 200 N610AW Marco Costa (msn E2082), was ferried from Mexico City to La Romana on 10 June. N609AW (msn E2070) should follow shortly. The 146s will be configured with a two-class cabin. No date has been announced for the start of services. The Dominican Republic was recently classified as a ‘category 1’ country under the US FAA’s International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) program, indicating that the country meets ICAO safety standards and allowing Dominican airlines to operate services to the USA.
