BAE Systems offers Avro RJ85s to Russian airlines

BAE Systems is hoping to place several Avro RJ85s with Russian airlines. Although the RJ85 was certificated under the Russian Interstate Aviation Committee airworthiness rules some time ago, BAE Systems has not had any examples available to offer. This is about to change, however, as Lufthansa begins to return thirteen RJ85s in March. BAE Systems considers Russian airlines to have considerable promise for the RJ85 as many operate ageing and fuel-thirsty models of a similar size, such as the Tupolev Tu-134 and Yakovlev Yak-42, while domestic designs such as the Sukhoi Superjet and Antonov An-148 (and its forthcoming larger sibling, the Antonov An-158) are still undergoing certification or just entering production.
