Indonesian BAe 146 operator Aviastar Mandiri began operating to the new Silampari airport at Lubuk Linggau, in South Sumatra, on 9 June. The airport is being developed by local authorities to attract investment to the region, and they contracted Aviastar to operate a service to Jakarta. The contract had initially been awarded to Riau Airlines, which was to operate it with a Fokker 50, but that airline’s problems led to bidding being reopened. The service will initially be flown four times a week, but could become daily if it proves successful. Due to runway length limitations, the 84-seat 146 will initially be limited to selling 60 seats; a planned lengthening of the runway should remove this constraint. A test flight was flown on 3 June 3 before regular services began on 9 June. Initial services were promising, with high load factors.
