The European Commission has questioned whether the proposed merger of Aegean Airlines with rival Olympic Air would meet European Union competition regulations, as the combined airline would operate the vast majority of domestic flights. An in-depth investigation has been launched, with a formal decision on the merger plan due in December. Aegean currently operates four Avro RJ100s, having returned two off-lease in June and July. RJ100 SX-DVE (msn E3374) was ferried to Southend via Stuttgart on 28 June, and was registered to BAE Systems (Operations) Ltd as G-CGNT on 7 July. Sistership SX-DVF (msn E3375) was ferried to Exeter on 9 July for maintenance by Flybe Engineering prior to handback. She was then ferried to Southend on 26 July, and was registered to BAE Systems (Operations) Ltd as G-CGNU on 28 July.
