Aegean-Olympic merger blocked

European antitrust regulators have blocked the proposed merger between Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air because it would create a “quasi-monopoly” in the Greek domestic market. Although the two airlines offered to give up some take-off and landing slots, the European Commission found this remedy inadequate as Greek airports are not slot-constrained. Aegean currently operates four Avro RJ100s. Two others were phased out in late 2010 in response to poor economic conditions, along with four Boeing 737s and two ATR72s.
