Venuezuelan airline Línea Aérea Mérida Internacional de Aviación C.A. (LaMia) is planning to obtain several Avro RJ85s from CityJet. A first example, RJ85 EI-RJL (msn E2349), was rolled out in full LaMia colors from the Air Livery paintshop in Norwich on 21 July. EI-RJL had been in storage at Norwich since September 2010, when she was returned off-lease by Blue1. LaMia is a joint venture between the Merida state government and private investors. It had attempted to start services in 2010 with an ATR72, but failed to obtain an operating licence. Mérida’s Alberto Carnevalli Airport is tightly hemmed in by mountains, requiring special procedures. It has not had scheduled service since 2008, following the crash of a Santa Bárbara Airlines ATR42.
