Airlink Avro RJ85 ZS-SSH (msn E2285) landed at Johannesburg with its nosewheel retracted on 11 November, suffering minor damage. The crew reported nose gear problems soon after departing Johannesburg Tambo International on flight 4Z 8739 to Pietermaritzburg, and decided to return to Johannesburg. However, they did not get a gear down indication for the nose gear. They performed a low pass over the airport, and controllers confirmed the nose gear was not extended. Trouble shooting failed to resolve the problem, so the crew orbited to burn off fuel before finally returning two hours later to land on Johannesburg’s runway 03R with the nose gear retracted. The aircraft landed safely at 21:20L, and was evacuated after coming to a stop. None of the 73 passengers and 4 crew on board were injured.
