Virgin Australia has won a five-year contract to operate cargo flights within Australia on behalf of TNT Express. The airline is planning to wet-lease two BAe 146QTs and a Boeing 737-300F to fulfill the contract, in addition to carrying belly freight on its passenger services. Virgin Australia had previously carried belly freight on behalf of Toll, but lost that contract to Qantas in 2015. The contract with TNT, which is worth about US$575 million, will come into effect in July. Presumably, the operations will be conducted on FedEx’s behalf, if its takeover of TNT Express is finalized by then.
