Start-up Atlantic Star has bid to operate an Avro RJ100 on scheduled services to St Helena, in response to a request for proposals issued by the St Helena Government. Atlantic Star is proposing to base an Avro RJ100 on St Helena and operate it twice weekly to Ascension Island, possibly with an extension to Accra, Ghana. The RJ100 would be procured from lessor Tronos and operated on Atlantic Star’s behalf by Britain’s Cello Airways. Last October, Atlantic Star arranged for Tronos to a test flight of an RJ100 to St Helena, taking advantage of the aircraft’s ferry flight to Chile. South Africa’s Airlink is also bidding for the contract, but it is not known whether it is proposing to use its Avro RJ85s or the Embraer 190s it has recently ordered. Embraer conducted a test flight to St Helena using a 190 in December. South Africa’s Comair was to have operated a Boeing 737-800 from Johannesburg, but this was cancelled after severe windshear was experienced on approach. Proposals were due by 6 February, and the preferred bidder should be announced on 28 April.
