During 2001, British Airways absorbed Gatwick-based CityFlyer Express, which had previously operated as a franchisee. CityFlyer’s sixteen Avro RJ100s operated as part of British Airways’ Gatwick fleet for a time, but then were transferred to British Airways CitiExpress, which operated them in full British Airways colors, alongside several BAe 146s formerly operated by franchisees British Regional Airlines and Manx. British Airways CitiExpress was rebranded as BA Connect from February 1, 2006, and then later sold to Flybe in February 2007. The RJ100s were retained by British Airways and transferred to BA CityFlyer.
British Airways has also, at various times, wet-leased BAe 146s and Avro RJs for short periods.
