Qantas has announced plans to replace the BAe 146s currently operated by National Jet Systems (NJS) on QantasLink services with Boeing 717s. The QantasLink 146 fleet has already been substantially reduced. Eight of the remaining 146s will be replaced between July 2005 and July 2006, and the other two by the end of 2006. The 717s are to be transferred from Qantas’ Jetstar subsidiary as they are replaced by Airbus A320s. With 115 seats in a single-class configuration, they will provide a substantial increase in capacity compared to the 146s, which are fitted with 65 to 76 seats, in a dual-class configuration. Qantas has not yet decided whether the 717s will be operated by Jetstar or by NJS.
