A BAe 146 operated by Romavia suffered severe damage in a landing accident at Bucuresti’s Henri Coanda airport at Otopeni on 22 April. BAe 146-200 YR-BEB (msn E2220) was operating a flight from Timisoara on behalf of Carpatair. She diverted to Craiova to wait out the passage of a storm, then continued on to Otopeni and landed on runway 8L in gusty winds and heavy rain. The right gear apparently left the taxiway while making a high speed turn off the runway and sank into the soft ground, causing a violent ground loop during which the right gear collapsed and the right wingtip and number 4 engine struck the ground. She came to rest pointing the way she had come, with the right wing tip and fuselage touching the ground. The 67 passengers and 6 crew on board were shaken but unhurt, and were evacuated safely. An investigation has begun into the causes of the accident. YR-BEB was built at Woodford in 1993, among the last BAe 146s built, and was delivered to Meridiana as I-FLRI in June of that year. She was returned to BAE Systems in July 2004, and subsequently leased out to Club Air from December 2004 to June 2006 and to Centavia from August to November 2006. After a short period in storage at Kemble, she was leased to Romavia in March 2007.
